If the only AI you’ve heard of is ChatGPT, you’ve heard of about a fifth of what’s available — and not always the right fifth for your specific question. The underdogs aren’t lesser tools waiting to catch up; many of them are genuinely competitive with the big 3 and free where the big 3 charge $20/month.
Here are four worth keeping a tab open for.
Why bother knowing about the underdogs
They have specific strengths the big 3 don't match
Perplexity does search-grounded answers with citations — neither ChatGPT nor Claude does this as cleanly. Qwen is dramatically better than the big 3 at certain non-English languages. DeepSeek's reasoning on math and code problems regularly wins blind comparisons. "Best AI" depends on the question.
They're free where the big 3 paywall
If you've hit ChatGPT's free-tier cap and don't want to pay $20/month, opening DeepSeek or Qwen in a new tab is a real answer. Same conversation quality, no subscription, no usage cap that actually bites for casual users.
They give you a backup when your main tool is down
ChatGPT has outages. Claude has outages. Whichever one is your daily driver, knowing one underdog means you're never blocked because of someone else's server problem.
It reduces your dependence on one company
Every AI company is changing pricing, models, and policies constantly. If your work or habits depend entirely on one of them, you're at the mercy of decisions you didn't make. Knowing where to go if your favorite tool gets worse is a quiet form of resilience.
The four worth keeping a tab open for
1. DeepSeek
🇨🇳 Made by: DeepSeek (Chinese AI lab). 💲 Cost: Free. 🌐 Where: chat.deepseek.com — no signup required to try.
DeepSeek burst into the conversation in early 2025 when its R1 reasoning model performed comparably to OpenAI’s top tier at a fraction of the cost. It’s particularly strong at problems that require step-by-step reasoning — math, code, logic puzzles, debugging — and shows its work in a way most chatbots don’t.
2. Qwen (Alibaba)
🇨🇳 Made by: Alibaba. 💲 Cost: Free. 🌐 Where: chat.qwen.ai — no signup required to try.
Qwen is Alibaba’s flagship AI and is genuinely strong at multilingual work. If you’re translating between English and a language ChatGPT handles indifferently — Mandarin obviously, but also Arabic, Hindi, Indonesian, Vietnamese, Korean — Qwen often produces noticeably better output. It also handles long documents well.
3. Perplexity
🇺🇸 Made by: Perplexity (US-based). 💲 Cost: Free tier (generous) + $20/mo Pro. 🌐 Where: perplexity.ai — no signup needed for basic use.
Perplexity is a different paradigm from the other three. Instead of answering from training data (which has a cutoff date), it searches the live web first and synthesizes an answer with citations to the actual sources it used. Click any citation, see the source, verify it. For research, current events, or any answer where “where did this come from?” matters, nothing else compares.
4. Mistral / Le Chat
🇪🇺 Made by: Mistral (French AI lab). 💲 Cost: Free. 🌐 Where: chat.mistral.ai — quick signup.
Mistral is Europe’s flagship AI lab, and Le Chat is their consumer-facing assistant. It’s fast, capable, and built under EU rules on data handling and privacy — which matters if you live in the EU or work for an organization with EU data-residency requirements. Capability-wise it’s slightly behind the top US models on the hardest tasks, but for everyday use you’d be hard-pressed to tell the difference.
When each underdog actually wins
Quick decision guide. Most people will keep one of the big 3 as their daily driver — but here’s when to switch tabs:
Honest caveats
How to actually try one
It’s faster than you think — and you don’t have to commit to anything.
Pick the one that fits the question you're about to ask
Use the decision guide above. Doing research? Perplexity. Math? DeepSeek. Translation? Qwen. Just curious? Any of them — they're all free.
Open it in a new tab
No app to install. Three of the four don't even require a signup to try (Mistral asks for one; the rest let you start chatting immediately).
Ask it your real question — the one you would have asked ChatGPT
The fastest way to learn whether an underdog wins for you is to do a side-by-side. Same prompt in two tabs. See which answer you'd actually use.
