How AI Turns One Worksheet Into Five Reading Levels in 10 Minutes

It’s the Sunday before the unit starts. You have one worksheet and twenty-eight kids reading somewhere between second grade and ninth. You know what good practice looks like here — same concept, different points of entry — and you also know that producing five versions of this passage means another two hours at the kitchen table.
So the worksheet goes out as-is. Four kids find it trivial and coast. Five kids can’t get past the second paragraph and quietly stop trying. You spend the period circling back to those five while the rest wait.
This is the single most common gap between what teachers know they should do and what the clock allows. It’s also the task AI is unusually good at, because rewriting the same content at different levels of linguistic demand is close to translation — and translation is the thing these tools do best.
The four things AI is genuinely good at here
Not all of differentiation is automatable. These four parts are.
Rewriting a passage at a lower reading level without cutting content
Shorter sentences, common words, one idea per sentence, explicit connections instead of implied ones. The passage still covers everything the original covered — it just stops making the reader hold four clauses in their head at once.
Adding real difficulty at the top, not just longer words
This is the half of differentiation that usually gets ignored. A strong reader isn't served by the same passage with fancier vocabulary; they're served by an added implication, a second cause, a claim they have to evaluate. AI will do this if you ask for depth explicitly.
Keeping the questions parallel across every version
Five versions are only useful if question 3 is testing the same thing for every student. AI holds that structure across all five far more consistently than a tired human rewriting at 10pm.
Telling you what it changed
Ask for a change log and you get a summary of what moved at each level, plus the places the AI wasn't confident. That list is where your review time should go — not on re-reading all five versions word by word.
The one rule that makes or breaks this
Differentiation is not “make it easier.” It’s same concept, different access.
The distinction matters enormously in practice, because if you just ask AI for a simpler version, it will helpfully remove your academic vocabulary. Evaporation becomes “water going up.” Condensation becomes “water coming back down.” The passage gets easier to read and simultaneously stops teaching the thing you’re teaching — and your struggling readers arrive at the unit test having never encountered the words on it.
The fix is one line in the prompt: name the terms that must survive at every level, and tell the AI to define them in simpler language rather than delete them. That single instruction is the difference between differentiation and dilution.

To generate all five versions
I teach [grade] [subject]. Below is a worksheet I use with my on-level students.
Create five versions of it, keeping the SAME learning objective and the SAME questions in the same order:
- Version 1 — roughly [two grades below] reading level
- Version 2 — roughly [one grade below] reading level
- Version 3 — my original, unchanged
- Version 4 — roughly [one grade above] reading level
- Version 5 — roughly [two grades above], with added conceptual depth
Rules:
- These terms must appear in EVERY version, including the lowest: [list your key vocabulary]. At the lower levels, define them in simpler words right where they appear — do not remove or replace them.
- Change the language, not the content. Every version teaches the same concept, and every question is answerable from that version’s passage.
- For the higher levels, add genuine depth — an implication, a complication, something to evaluate. Do not just use longer words.
- Keep all versions roughly the same length, except the lowest, which may be shorter.
- Do not change any numbers, dates, or calculations.
- At the end, list what you changed at each level and flag anything you were unsure about.

To sanity-check a version you’re unsure about
Read this passage and tell me roughly what grade reading level it lands at, which two or three sentences are the hardest, and which words are most likely to stop a struggling reader. Don’t rewrite it — just diagnose it.
What five levels actually look like
Here’s a real example, so you can judge the output rather than take it on faith. The original is a fifth-grade science passage on the water cycle. Key vocabulary locked: evaporation, condensation, precipitation.
Version 3 — the original, on grade level:
When the sun heats water in rivers, lakes, and oceans, some of that water turns into vapor and rises into the air. This is called evaporation. High in the sky, the vapor cools and turns back into tiny droplets, forming clouds — a process called condensation. When the droplets grow heavy enough, they fall as rain or snow. This is precipitation. The water collects in rivers and oceans again, and the cycle repeats.
Version 1 — about two grades below:
The sun heats water in lakes and oceans. Some of that water turns into a gas and floats up into the sky. This is called evaporation. High up, the air is cold. The gas turns back into tiny drops of water. The drops group together and make clouds. This is called condensation. The drops get bigger and heavier until they fall as rain or snow. This is called precipitation. The water goes back into the lakes and oceans. Then the whole thing starts again.
Notice what survived: all three vocabulary words, in bold position, each one defined by the sentence next to it. Nothing was removed — the sentences were split and the connections were made explicit.
Version 5 — about two grades above, with added depth:
Solar radiation drives the water cycle. As the sun warms the surface of oceans and lakes, liquid water absorbs enough energy to escape as vapor — evaporation. Because air temperature falls with altitude, that vapor cools as it rises and condenses around microscopic particles of dust and salt, forming the droplets we see as clouds. Condensation also releases the heat the water absorbed on the way up, which is one reason storms can intensify so quickly. When droplets collide and merge until gravity overcomes the rising air holding them aloft, they fall as precipitation. Runoff and groundwater return that water to the ocean and the cycle continues — though not on any fixed schedule. A single water molecule might spend nine days in the atmosphere or ten thousand years locked in an ice sheet.
That last version is doing something the original doesn’t: latent heat, condensation nuclei, droplet coalescence, residence time. A strong reader now has somewhere to go. That’s the half of differentiation that usually never gets written.
A realistic 10-minute workflow
Start from your on-level version (0 min)
Don't write anything new. Use the worksheet you already planned to hand out. This process adds versions; it doesn't replace your planning.
Fill in the prompt and list your locked vocabulary (2 min)
The vocabulary list is the part worth slowing down for. Anything that will appear on the assessment goes in it.
Generate, then read the lowest level first (3 min)
Version 1 is where the drift happens — it's the version most likely to have quietly dropped a concept or oversimplified a cause. If the bottom version holds up, the middle ones almost always do.
Check that question 3 is still question 3 (2 min)
Scan the question sets side by side. Same order, same skill, same answer. This is the check that protects your grading later.
Read the change log and spot-fix (2 min)
The AI's own "here's what I was unsure about" list tells you where to look. Fix those spots directly rather than re-reading everything.
Save the prompt (1 min)
It works for every passage you'll ever assign. Keep it in a note and swap the worksheet each time.
